I am in very mixed mind about this situation. As for our emotional attachment to the characters, I think it is very normal and worry about regular viewers who hasn't formed some sort of attachment (if the majority don't then the writers failed). I explain this to friends the way they are attached to their sports teams, that is how I am attached to the characters on Buffy (I don't have the same feelings for the characters on Angel, can't say for sure why).

As for Dyna's post, I agree that the writers seem to have forgotten their own theme. Lets look at the 7 major characters: Spike, worse than he was at the beginning of the Gift (more about this below), Willow - way worse off and falling off the deep end prior to the end of the season, Xander - starting to realize the mistakes he has made, but he hasn't grown at all about his biggest flaw, hisjudgementalism based on his responses at the end of Entropy, Giles - he's just gone, Buffy - she's been trapped in an unhealthy relationship with everyone around her, Tara - she's grown and now she'll be dead, Dawn - well she seems to be growing up a little. Somewhere they have lost the message.

As for Spike and what he does tonight,we forget that Spike is a vampire. We have been told continually that vampires are what they are and they don't change. I don't think a chip was ever meant to do that. A review from Loey says exactly how I feel and better than I am able to: "His actions don't surprise me, either. He never could take no for an answer, and he was always following Buffy around and pushing himself on her. Before they "broke up," she gave in to his advances, and initiated a few herself. But what if she hadn't? Would he have accepted that for long?" I don't think so. I think this scene would have been played 10 episodes ago instead. I do think it will help me through the scene to remember just what Spike is. I must also say that this keeps me from being bothered as much as others are with the scene from Dead Things (Buffy hurting vampires is in her blood, it is a part of her being that it is not of others, it is part of her calling (she is a vampire slayer after all) and I think she has to overcome this part of her nature every time she deals with Spike and it shows some growth that she does not stake Spike regardless of the chip).

I know this view isn't the most popular around here, but I do think it helps me accept the dynamic of their relationship and the actions that occur a little easier. As for what is happening with Tara and Willow, it seems like a deliberate attempt to stick the fans.
