Buffy's Jonathan Chats You Up

This week, Danny Strong--Big Bad Geek Jonathan on Buffy the Vampire Slayer--is in the house with all the answers to your burning Qs, everything from working with James Marsters and being a "Superstar" to what's in store for the finale. Meanwhile, Wanda's got the scoop on the big Friends shocker, a new legal eagle on The Practice and a lethal decision on Alias.

Hey, tubers! Danny will be here in just a couple minutes, so send in your questions, and I'll lay them on him.

grill, gossip & gripe May 6, 2002

From Prufrock: Danny, I think the Jonathan character is one of the most important in all of Buffy. He's Everyman...everyone can identify with him. Are you proud of how you have portrayed him? Would you have done anything differently?
Danny: I've tried to portray him as truthfully as possible. There are a few episodes I wish I could've done differently, but that's the way it goes.

From Ken: Who would win in a fight, your Troika or the Lone Gunmen? You guys are so better then them, and a spinoff TV show with you three would have worked.
Oh, we'd kick their ass! And a show with us would have worked, but they wouldn't go for it now because of the Gunmen.

From BK: Which Buffy character would Jonathan most likely have a romantic relationship with? How about Harmony?!
That's a really good question. I would guess Willow if she were straight. But since she's not, it makes me even more likely to say Willow.

From toliver: From peeing in the pool to an accessory to murder: Is playing darker Jonathan more fun?
[Laughs.] It's more interesting. Yes, it's more fun because there's more depth to it.

From kel-7: I love Jonathan but loathe the Troika, especially Warren. Tell me Jonathan redeems himself and kicks his ass!
I can't tell you because I would get into trouble. But thank you for loving Jonathan. Let me just say that he attempts to redeem himself.

From Slayer_in_NY: Who's your favorite actor on the show?
James Marsters, because he's so cool and he's nothing like his character.

From Matt: What went through your mind when the writers first approached you with the idea for the "Superstar" episode?
I was incredibly flattered. I couldn't believe it since I hadn't been on the show for a little while. In fact, they had written a whole episode without having ever seen my work. I was so excited.

From Angel: Was that your actual singing voice?
No. I'm sorry to say it wasn't. It was Brad Kane who was in Tucker. He also sings Aladdin's songs in the movie Aladdin.

From Levy: I love your evil funny self on Buffy! What's it like working with the Buffy cast?
Thank you. Everyone is really professional and really good actors. They're all very efficient. Working with Tom [Lenk] and Adam [Busch] is the most fun I've had on any job.

From Gabriella: Jonathan presented Buffy with the Class Protector Award, and you made a beautiful speech about how important she was. How do you reconcile that with the torture Jonathan has been inflicting on Buffy this season?
I think he has gotten older, and his desires have grown. Things changed after the "Superstar" episode.

From Delilah: Who would win in a fight--you, Adam or Tom?
I would kick both their asses. But on the show, Warren [Adam] would probably win.

From faustian_princes: It must be exciting to venture into new sectors of the Business. Can you tell us more about Die, Harry, Die?
Wow, someone has done their research! We're raising finances for it. It's a script I wrote that I'm really proud of. We're hopefully gonna start in June.

From sandor1: Any chance that Jonathan will get a love interest in the future?
I sure hope so. I've never had a love interest in any show I've ever done. I'm going crazy! I mean, it's the whole reason I got into acting. [Laughs.]

From Slayer4545: Rumors are that season seven is the end of Buffy...heard anything from Joss [Whedon] or the cast?
I haven't spoken to Joss about it. The word on the set, honestly, changes every week. I mean, you never really know on a show until it's picked up or canceled. Though with a show like Buffy, it would be Joss' decision to end the show; it wouldn't be canceled.

From marlamae: How did you first get involved in the show?
I auditioned for the pilot presentation for the role of Xander. And obviously, I didn't get it. So, the casting director brought me back in to audition for a couple of one-liner parts.

From evanichole: If you HAD gotten the part of Xander, would you have done the part differently?
Absolutely. It would have been my energy instead of Nic's energy. And by that I mean Danny Strong, not Jonathan's.

From sydney33: I saw you on an episode of the TV version of Clueless playing a sci-fi fan. Any fears of typecasting in future roles?
I'm not as concerned with what type of characters I play but more on how well the part is written. I don't worry so much about typecasting.

From harrylee11: Do you think Jonathan is hot for Buffy and he's using the Troika as a way of working out that aggression?
I think he has a crush on Buffy. I don't know if he's working out his aggressions, but sure, there are underlying feelings there. I mean, she's really hot.

From Anna: What's your favorite episode? My favorite episode with you was "Earshot." You were fantastic!
Thank you, I appreciate that. I have two favorite episodes: "Superstar," because I wore really cool clothes and "Dead Things," because the writing was so good.

From Lynn: Have you enjoyed being the Big Bad? Which previous Big Bad was your favorite?
I love being the Big Bad. I'm a big fan of Principle Skinner, just because I like that actor.

From caucushenry: Is Strong your real last name, or is it a stage name?
That is a fantastic question! That is my real name. My grandfather changed his name from a long Russian name when he arrived here, and he chose Strong because he thought the Russians were going to win the revolution.

From PaulaB: Even though I'm not supposed to like your character, I do. You are dead hot! Are you at all like Jonathan in real life?
You have good taste! I don't think I'm much like him in real life. Jonathan is kind of shy, but I'm annoyingly extroverted. As we come to the end of the season, Jonathan grows up and comes more into my natural energy. We'll see more of me and less of the Jonathan we know now.

From Nolan: "Earshot" is an all-time favorite. How did it feel to have it shelved until the fourth season?
I felt they made the right decision, because it might have been inappropriate to air it so close after the Columbine incident.

From slayerfan 12: What was it like being separated from the rest of the cast this season?
Adam and Tom are so cool that it didn't really bother me, and toward the end, I got to see some of them again. I had so much fun working with those two guys that I didn't really miss anyone. But we're all friends now, so I see everyone anyway.

From anonymous: I was shocked to see you drinking a beer in a recent Rolling Rock commercial! How old are you, and how do you feel about playing teens?
I'm 27. And I apologize for shocking you! I prefer to play characters closer to my age, but I don't feel like a teen on Buffy anymore. It's more like early twenties. I'll be playing characters closer to my age from here on out.

From spoiledforlife: What did it feel like in "Superstar" to have all that faux merchandise on set with likenesses of you?
It was how heaven should be (if I ever make it there). I still have all the stuff if any of you want to buy it!

From woofermouse: Who would the love interest be, and what would she look like if you got to choose?
That's a tough question. Maybe a tall, red-headed bombshell. How about that?

From shaun401: Has Buffy wrapped for the season? Will you be back during the seventh season?
Yes, Buffy has wrapped for the season, and I have no idea if I'll be back for the seventh.

From cndmlberan: What would you think of Buffy and Jonathan?
I think that's good thinking! It would be fun. But I would want it to be closer to Buffy and Spike's relationship, i.e., sex all the time.

From Wanda: Anything coming up that you can tease to?
I will say that everything goes to hell. I'll be on it all the way through to the finale. But not everyone will be. Mwah-ha-ha-ha.

From Wanda: Okay, you guys. Danny's taking off, and we're going to move on to our normal Monday goodies. Thanks so much for being here, superstah!
Danny: Thanks so much everyone. Take care!

The BtVS and Angel portion of Wanda’s chat

From jennifromphoenix: The only thing that would make me grab a box of Kleenex for the finale of Buffy is if the Scooby member who dies is Willow. Please tell me it is not so?
You just saved yourself $1.49. The Big Scooby Death is not Willow, and it actually happens this week.

From chris345: Will there be any resolution for Willow and Tara on Buffy?
Yes. But as usual, the warm fuzzies don't last.

From michelle_hair: Bush's War? A terrorist?
Ah, yes. Last week's clue to the Big Scooby Death. Just don't forget the president's southern tongue.

From laof420: I just have to say if the Buffy thing is false, you are just so cruel.
(Gulp.) I'm sorry! Forgive me. But it is somewhat close to the truth. After Willow turns to the dark side, an old friend does return to help save her. Giles. He and Anya work together to help cure Big Bad Willow of her thirst for blood.

From lynnwallkill: What's up with Buffy & Spike? Does Buffy have real feelings for him? I love them together!
He certainly has real feelings for her. I'm hearing that in the finale, we find out that not only does Spike want the chip removed but he also wants a certain something that'd turn him into an Angel knockoff. I'll give you a hint: It sounds Korean.

From jimdaniels: Can Xander and Anya PLEASE end up together?
I can only tell you this: In the finale, Anya confesses to Xander that she's a demon again.

From kiera1234: Got any more Cordy and Angel news?
They profess their love to each other--but after they do, it isn't pretty. I also hear there's a proposal in the finale (although not necessarily CordAngel).

From laney1185: Wanda, PLEASE tell me: Is it true that for the season finale of Angel, when Cordelia and Angel finally confess their true feelings for each other, she is sent a message that its time for her to leave this world?
That's what I hear.

From bluehere: Wanda, what can you tell us about tonight's Angel and Connor?
Make sure you check out our Who the Hell? on Vincent Kartheiser, who plays Connor. (Hint: Watch for the "purge" slip.) A little added quotage for you, from Vinnie on his character: "He's a demon killer. And basically a frustrated young man who has never known his real family. The only thing he knows about his family and the world he's supposed to live in is from his surrogate father Holtz, who has every intention of feeding him falsehoods. Connor is a tough kid, but I don't think he has ever seen a woman. I don't think he has ever had a day of comfort in his life. He has always been running around and being chased, or chasing someone else. His goal for the past 13 years has been to get back to this dimension and murder his true father. So, he's rather frustrated, but I think for him it's all justified."

From mranagone11: What happens with Connor in the end? Will he stick around?
Yes. A source close to the show told me that Vincent has signed on for next season.
