Candle making novice

Hi Everyone,
I would really like to make my own candles but I have a lot of questions, like for example is there anyway to make wax other than buying some candles and melting them then molding them the way I want? If I want to suspend something inside the wax before it hardens, like a flower or something, is there a special type of wax to use that is see through? Is a wick the rope in the middle of the candle that you light up? What is gel wax and what are the best uses for it? When melting wax can I use any sort of cooking pot or must I use something special? What are the basic supplies that I must have if I want to make candles?
