MVD: We either see the world as it is or the world as we believe it to be. You like to believe that cops are good and simple carriers of justice, perhaps. I see them as this also, yet many of them are not simple carriers of justice.

I think you are way over-simplifying my view of the police. Some of them do become police because it is a way to strut and be important. The town marshall at the town where I teach is like that. However, should he pull me over (and I doubt he will since his is the only speed limit I respect on my 32 mile drive since he has a well-deserved reputation for being a stickler in that regard) I would not take it personally - to paraphrase the mafia movies (which I dislike, but that is another discussion) - it is just business, not personal.

Some are police because they can officially bully. That is not entirely a bad thing. If channelled properly those instincts can be used to enforce the law - the bully's sense of wanting things to be a certain way can become a strong sense of wanting people to conform to the mandates of the law. It can provide the impetus for action. It also can provide for the need to protect those who are unable to protect themselves. Of course, if channelled improperly you've got yourself one hell of a problem.

RE: long hair. Is it really that far out of the mainstream even now? I'd have thought the long hair of the hair bands of the '80s and the mullet craze of the '90s would have accustomed people to men with long hair... Perhaps, I am mistaken. Be assured that I don't care how long your hair is - although if it is too long I'd recommend not riding a bicycle unless you tie it up in some way.

RE: hunting, Harley riders, etc. To paraphrase Freud - sometimes a cigar is a cigar. Sometimes men hunt because they like to hunt. Some men may like the Harley life - or they just like to make a lot of noise. Or they may like the wind going through their hair. I like to write to you because, indeed, I am an elder imparting wisdom to those younger than myself. :)
