He was a Lutheran - very, very close to Catholicism in religious beliefs (we don't do dem saints or the Mary stuff though or the Pope). Catholic theology would be easy for him to grasp (in his case, as subject matter but not in matters of belief), as it is for myself (another Lutheran, still practicing and active!)
