Subject: ANHOW Review of Books: "Joshua" bu Joseph F. Girzone

Genre: fiction
Published: Collier books, 1983

I was struck by the irony of a recent remark by MVD. He asked something like, "What would you do if I was Jesus Christ come back to Earth?" The irony is that at the time I was reading this book, "Joshua". It is about the return of Jesus to a small American town. He takes the name Joshua and he starts a small carpentry business out of his rented home and changes people's lives with his simple observations about faith and the role of the church. Of course, Joshua finds himself in trouble with the modern-day church because he preaches a message of freedom that is inconsistent with some people's ideas about what Christianity is all about. The comparisons between church leadership and the Pharisees are pointed out.

It is a simple book, written in simple language with thoughtful intent. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I thought about digging up a bunch of quotes to spur on some discussion, but I've thought better of it. Its a great little book. You can easily read it for yourself, if you are interested. I've seen it in bookstores (it has a distinctive cover), but was encouraged to read it due to one of those 1/2 hour long movie infomercials they have on cable in which they interviewed the cast of the movie they made of the book. Apparantly, it was released in April. The website for the movie is www.joshuathemovie.com It has a trailer you can dowload. Be aware that the movie plot does vary from the book.

I give this book a "B" (it has a "clunky" ending, in my opinion).

If you do read it, I'd love to read what you think, esp. Bill (from his comments, I know he'd find it interesting) and MVD.
