I think the point with so much pop music, whether Rap or not, is that it has trends and when one particular style gets hot everyone with a smidgen of talent jumps on board and makes songs that "sell" -- this is no recent occurance, it's been going on for the entirety of the recording industry's history.
Rap, however, has evolved at an amazing rate with new innovations in style happening every couple years. Personally, I find it's the most interesting music being made today. The artists are inventive, clever and original and the more I listen to the more I feel a deep desire to kill whitey . . . wait, scratch that last part.
It's dangerous to make a decision about any musical style by only listening to the most popular (ie least common denominator) verisons of it.
