According to the same poll, Adilbrand, MVD and both of my brothers-in-law would be counted as Lutherans and as far as I know they have not darkened the doors of a church unless its been for a wedding, baptism or a funeral for years.

They are using lazy statistics, such as baptism figures, confirmation figures or membership rolls. Those are a place to start but they don't count real attendance (Every group has this problem. Even the Key Club that I sponsor at my high school has about 20% membership that never or rarely attends any event or meeting) or include those that attend but never join.

If you used membership rolls, Bob Dylan would be counted multiple times since he's made his conversions quite public. He's been Jewish and Christian and back again and back again several times. Knowing how loose churches are with their membership records, he's probably on most of their books still!
