Author: Mt. Healthy Mountaineer, your intrepid reviewer
Subject: ANHOW Review of Books: Bum Steer: A Jenny Cain Mystery by Nancy Pickard

Genre: mystery
Published: 1990 by Pocket Books

Synopsis:

Jenny Cain is the director of the Port Frederick, Massachusetts, Civic Foundation (a philanthropic not-for-profit). One day, she gets a call that the foundation has received a multi-million dollar ranch in west Kansas.

First question - why her little foundation? Second question, why all of the weird fine print to the will, such as no relatives may come on the property or they lose their inheritance?

So, Jenny Cain heads west to start getting some answers and soon people start dying and she is shot at and a rattlesnake almost gets her and then things start to get interesting.

My review:

Good mystery. I sort of had it figured out but its resolution was still satisfying. The only problem I have with the book is the cover. The cover is a composite of a couple of events that happened in the book, but one of them is definitely in the last quarter of the book and I kept wondering when it was going to happen (I won't tell you so as not to spoil it for you as well).

I give this book a B+.

Here is a link to another Pickard book I have reviewed on this forum: http://www.voy.com/6367/2/12233.html

Here is the link to Amazon.com so you can see what others have said. You can also see the book cover I was complaining about. Amazon link to Bum Steer
