The presence of 3rd parties are a sign that the political stew is bubbling along quite nicely.

BTW - another example of co-opting of a third party by one of the two major parties is happening right here in Indianapolis. The Libertarian Party ran Andrew Horning as a candidate for mayor of Indy and Governor of Indiana. By far, he was the most interesting candidate in the mayor's race - he was upbeat and full of interesting ideas and he was a devestating debater and for a great deal of the race he set the agenda.

This election he is running against Julia Carson (don't get me started on this crazy woman - my wife had dealings with her when she ran the Center Township Trustee's office and my wife was helping to run a food pantry for Lutheran Child and Family Services- Carson's administration was incompetent and loopy back then and she continues on that pattern today)...Anyway, back to what I was saying. This election, Horning is running as a Republican. Why? Well, ideologically the Libertarians, as a group, are closest to the Barry Goldwater branch of the Republicans and he said he got tired of being told that people thought he was a great guy but they didn't think the Libertarians had a chance to win. So, he compromised a bit in order to get a shot at putting some of his ideas in office.

So, in this case, an idea wasn't co-opted, a candidate was.
