Right now the problem is the BBC is asking quite a bit of money for it. Sci-Fi had a chance with it but passed, and everyone who has seen it thinks it was bad decision. On the other hand, after a second season, things might change.

The first season was 13 episodes, 45 minutes each. It is also the 9th Doctor -- the actor is a rather big name in the UK, but he only accepted the role for one season with an option for more. He tends to only last for a season in any one show, and just want to try different roles, so he decided to go. His Doctor is at once very enthusiastic and jaded all in one. His outfit, of the leather jacket, was to show how the Time War and the death of his people (and many other species) which was partly at his own hand has left him cold and trying to distance himself from others. Rose, his companion, of course sets out the way for his to overcome this...

In the first season outside of Autons and Daleks, there are references throughout to the past without making it too fanwank. UNIT has an appearance, and the head of a Cyberman is seen in an alien museum... but as a whole, the show tries to go into other new areas. One story ( a two parter) had some interesting ideas, but also probably the weakest story -- Aliens of London/World War III. Outside of that, however, the episode with Charles Dickens is great, the Daleks are at the top of their form, and from what I hear, "The Empty Child + The Doctor Dances" two-parter is the tops of the season -- taking place in World War II under the bombing of London, a strange plague is striking the streets..

This Christmas there will be a 60 minute Christmas special, called "The Christmas Invasion." He has some somehow Santa Clause will be involved but is being rather obscure.

Season 2 will be another 13 episodes, and The Cybermen and another villian (left unsaid) are to appear as with other new stories and ideas. Then another Christmas special and a third season have already been comissioned.

The success has even led to an interesting bit of praise in Parliament: http://www.unitnews.co.uk/story.php?article_id=270

The current buzz is if no US network picks it up by March, then DVDS might come out in the US. That being said, I've heard it is all over the internet if you know how to get it.

So there was a 9th Doctor, though short lived. The 10th Doctor like Colin is a longtime fan of the show, and has been involved with the audio stories for sometime. Also he has been rated as one of the better up-and-coming stars in the UK, so not exactly a bad choice from at least word of mouth.

If you saw any of the clips, you can certainly see how the show has upgraded itself; CGI clearly makes it easier than ever before, but they do not limit themselves to purely CGI use -- which is good.
