While the 8th Doctor is so short on screen, they have done quite a bit on audios -- you might want to go here to listen to one being played week by week - http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/drama/progpages/drwho.shtml (then hit listen again which plays with realplayer). The current one being played is one of the fan favorites though it has a bit of a continuity issue involved.

There are still questions as to why Chris left so quickly, but it seems that he just likes variety in his acting and not staying with one role too long. My parents are enjoying his Who, which is a first -- so it tells you he hit the chords for the modern audience.

When they get to the 13th of course something will be worked out. The Master shows it is possible to go beyond the normal number of regenerations, and I think they have it set up with what happens at the end of the 9th Doctor's era to have a way to explain how he got more regenerations...
