I just got back from seeing it as well. I loved the battle of Helm's Deep! I thought Gollum was fantastic. I agree, it should have ended where the book ended, but I can see why he chose not to. It would have been kind of anti-climatic, I think. (And I like the Arwen scenes.)

I have no real comment on Faramir taking Frodo to Osgiliath. Perhaps it was just to show what Mordor was up to and giving the audience a reason to care - to introduce the audience to Gondor. A movie doesn't have the depth a novel can have, so sometimes things must be done a little differently in the movie. Perhaps it was a wise choice, perhaps it was not. It was a fun movie to watch. It is like countless Dracula/Frankenstein/Tarzan movies - none of which measure up to the respective novels, but are quite enjoyable if taken on their own terms. If you want pure Tolkien, then read it. That is the only way it will ever be gained.

Anyway, so many of the scenes left me wide-eyed with awe. I liked the movie. Of course, I love the first one too, especially the extended version.
