Is that looked down upon? My wife still breastfeeds our nine month old (very rarely in public, and when done so, is very discreet). She plans to continue until he is a year old. Our firstborn weaned himself at 6 months and then seemed to catch a lot of little illnesses. #2 has barely had a runny nose since birth. I haven't noticed anyone treating her different. Could be a difference in the North and the South. Southern culture has its own flare that is surprising for mid-westerners. I grew up in Cleveland, OH, have been in the South for 13 years, and still get caught off guard by cultural differences.

You could say the same for the Pac-Northwest and their fine coffee, the Southwest and their food, the West coast and their tans, the North and their cold weather, the South and their Bible belt.

HOwever, I think you did well in describing American culture as a whole.
