Author: Mt. Healthy Mountaineer
Subject: ANHOW Review of Books: Famous Indianapolis Cars and Drivers by Brock Yates

Published: 1960 by Harper & Row

Synopsis:

This is a history of the Indy 500 from 1911 to 1960 with emphasis on some of the more interesting drivers and cars, as the title suggests. There are fantastic stories of the speedway such as the wealthy driver who tried to buy the entire field of 33 cars because he was upset with the Speedway officials. His plan was to buy all of the teams and then refuse to race on race day to show his displeasure. He only succeeded in buying 14 of them and he sold them all back before race day.

My review:

I picked this book up from a pile of books being purged out of a school library and man, do I consider it to be a find! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Any fan of the 500 should try to find it and read it!

I give this book an "A."

BTW, the author went on to author several more books and become the editor of Car and Driver magazine.

Here's the Amazon.com link, but I'll warn you - it is sparse since it is not in print and hasn't been in decades.http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/006026635X/qid=1083480771/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-7068924-9951208?v=glance&s=books
