Pop Trends that all pretty much sound the same to the uninitiated listener:

MoTown - it all pretty much sounds like the 4 Tops to me.

Rockabilly - it all pretty much sounds like Roy Orbison to me (but not as good)

Disco - need I say more?

Hair bands

Folk music

British Invasion - Herman's Hermits and the early BeeGees are both really annoying to me.

Beatles - the Monkees were a direct ripoff, as were lots of others.

Punk rock

Grunge

Techno

Boy Bands

Everything on X103 in Indy.

etc.

Now, if you really can't tell the difference between Smashing Pumpkins and Barenaked Ladies, you're really not listening.
