There are many reasons. One, hospitals look to see if you have signed such cards or not. If you have, depending upon which one you are at, they might actually give you less care (because the odds are not as good anyway) and just harvest your organs. Sadly, a lot of what goes on in hospitals is not about the health of the patients, but the finances of the institution.

If you think of it this way: Patient A has a 10% chance they might live if you add to the care they are already having. You might get some of that money but you probably won't. They have signed organ donation... well, here you have organs to harvest for someone else who will more likely be able to survive and pay.

Patient B: They have not signed. Their organs are not going tobe harvested. They can still fund you a little, so you might as well encourage them to go for that extra 10% chance.

That is a simple explanation of what is going on, it is more complex, and I think for many more unconscious than they realize. However, sadly, many reports have seen the accuracy of this before..
