Laptops have ups and downs. You'll trade size and portability for cost, battery-life, reduced upgradability, reduced performance, repair, etc. The key is if ups are worth more than the downs for you.

Size and portability are very nice ammenities. Basically, you can take it with you provided you have the same access as at home, like ISP. Weight, screen size, and ease of use you'll need to consider.

Tethers. How many connections will you need most of the time while using it. Power, phone, network, and external devices can make it hassle.

There used to be a larger gap between performance, but that has narrowed and costs have come down (as on all PC's). I'd still compare a laptop to desktop with similar features to consider price of trade-offs.

Once of the biggest troubles with laptops is how to solve the problem of breaking down. They are still very unfriendly to repair which will need to happen given the risks of portability. On the up side, they are getting made hardier. You'll need to think about some kind of warranty as well.

There is also the issue of making backups. I would only own a laptop as a second PC unless you got it for a steal. I'd also consider networking it with a primary PC with a large hard drive for ease of back ups and data transfer. Portability has it disadvantages when data is lost due to breakdowns and need to recover data.

Options are limited depending on what is built-in and what isn't. Laptops don't upgrade well like desktops, so it may look good today but in a year not as much so. External pieces can be pricey as can upgrading them.

It's back to the trade-offs. Do you need/want the size and portability versus the negative aspects of a laptop? I'd mull over all the options before jumping into one.
