I am a huge fan of both. I have virtually everything of both on VHS (and I am starting to get them on DVD).

There is no "better". They are different. It is like asking which is the best Doctor Who.

Both have their cheesy, campy entries (One of the Draculas Hammer put out has Christopher Lee saying nothing. Essentially he thought the dialogue was stupid and refused to say any of it. He was already under contract, and so had to be filmed. The latter Universal monster-fest movies (House of Frankenstein, House of Dracula) are also weak, but have their moments).

Both are atmospheric in their own ways. Both are beautifully filmed. Both tend to have extremely strong scripts early in the various series' that weaken as more entries get attached (although Hammer's Frankenstein suffers less from this than the others).

The Universal mummy pictures I felt were stronger than the Hammer mummies. The Hammer Dracula's were stronger than Universal's.

All I can say is that I enjoy them both - just like I enjoy all the Doctor Whos.
