Subject: Review: Doctor Who: Chimes of Midnight

Having listened to the story, I can see why it is quite popular. It is another good addition to the Doctor Who audio-adventure library. It does require one having listened to the first 8th Doctor audio adventure to really make sense of it at the end, and so I would not recommend it as the first one to listen to, but after that it is a very good story.

The Doctor and Charley arrive in a weird, Victorian house sometime in the 20th century. Because of this, there are similarities between it and Ghost Light: both take place in victorian houses which seem to have weird things going on. In this one, every hour, on the hour, someone dies. And time does not remain constant in its flow, so it will speed up or slow down... and at Midnight, in the house, everyone who died will come back to life, and there will be more death, more mysteries for the Doctor to figure out. There is, in this way, a time loop going on within the house, and the Doctor and Charley seem to be trapped in it. Even when he is able to get back to the TARDIS, he is unable to escape from the house.

In general, I think this story is actually better than Ghost Light, which is I think, what it is most similar to -- and yet quite a bit different. Like Ghost Light, there is a connection between the Doctor's companion and the house -- but what it is, is quite a bit different, and I think in general, leads to a more satisfying conclusion than Ghost Light. I wish this one would have been filmed for television. I wish a story like this, or Storm Warning, or Neverland, had been used on FOX, because I think it would have had more success and Doctor Who might be televised instead of audio adventures.

I give Chimes of Midnight an A-. It's good, quite good, and one of the more mature, better Doctor Who stories for quite some time.. audio or televised.
