Going back to the Eden story, we see that the "original sin", or sin of Adam and Eve was one that could also be called the attainment of self-awareness or consciousness. I think that men have intuitively known for thousands of years that the real reason they suffer is because they are able to reflect and see their own nature in relation to suffering. Their "perfect" nature was the one that did not know good and evil and did not know self. Does this make sense?

Original sin could also be explained by the idea that many times we do, in fact, repeat the same behaviours of our parents. This may be over-simplified, but I think it is also, at the very least, worthy of mentioning.

Mark :)
