[Page draft submitted by Widgett, who looks good in a loincloth--no, really.]

December 13, 1998... Cinescape reported rumors that Arnold Schwarzenegger not only wants to pick up his sword once more but also sit his fur-covered butt in the director's chair. But when would we see it? Well, not any time soon, that's for sure. Their source mentions the word "decade". [Originally appeared in Cinescape Online; reported by Widgett.]

March 1, 1999... Among the many films that were recently announced as being on the plate of the Threshold/Behaviour partnership was this project. [Originally appeared in ZENtertainment; reported by Widgett.]

May 18, 2000... So what is best in life? "Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and arch that eyebrow." That's right, USA Today printed a report that wrestler The Rock might just be Conan in the sequel. Apparently the rights have been owned by "people outside the movie industry" and the producers are convincing said people that Rock is the way to go. If Rock is signed, Vince McMahon will get a producing credit. [Originally appeared in USA Today; scooped by Wrestling Smark, Bobby, and Anonymous.]

May 30, 2000... Hathor is a lucky bovine who evidently snagged a pre-release copy of the Conan DVD. Here's the report: "On May 30, the DVD special collector's edition of Conan the Barbarian is due to come out. It's about time. Anyways, the DVD has a commentary track by [Conan co-writer/director] John Milius and Arnold where they talk about the old days and how much fun it was to make the movie, blah blah blah. It is a great commentary. At the end of the movie, they talk about the future. I don't know how seriously they should be taken, but they both say that they want to work together again and do Conan 3. I was very skeptical until I read this page and seeing the bit about the aging Conan makes sense." [Scooped by Hathor, the Wild Cow of Death.]

July 12, 2000... IGN FilmForce is reporting that Conan the Barbarian director John Milius has the inside edge to both write and direct the third Conan movie -- and that the directing brothers of The Matrix are set to produce the flick! According to FilmForce, the Wachowskis office is right next to Milius on the WB lot and they'd love to help put it all together behind-the-scenes, but make sure it's Milius and Arnold Schwarzenegger's movie all the way. [Originally appeared on IGN FilmForce.]

In one word: YES!

September 15, 2000... Arnold's return may be just around the corner? Our trusted scooper 'C' informs us that after having talked with director John Milius, Arnold Schwarzenegger may bring back his Conan character after all. There's been no official word on the film's title but our scooper suggests it may be The Return of Conan. [Thanks again to 'C'; reported by Reg.]

However, a new development might create a potential problem for Milius to return to the Conan director's chair. Earlier this week Stan Lee Media, the new entertainment company created by the former Marvel Comics legendary creator, announced it had purchased Conan Properties, Inc. and now owns the Conan licence. The deal was estimated to be worth $4.3 million.

Shortly after the deal was made public, Variety reported that one of the directions Stan Lee Media wants to take the property is to the Internet. Plans for online Conan "webisodes" are being discussed. How this might impact negotiations for the movie rights and Milius' future plans for making a third Conan film remain to be seen. [Originally appeared in Variety.]

November 7, 2000... The footwear plummets, this from Variety and Hollywood Reporter. Milius has been confirmed as picking up the pen and sitting in the chair for this one, with the Brothers Wachowski involved with pre-production and possibly directing second unit. Obviously they'll be juggling this with their Matrix projects. This will take place at WB, where they snagged the one-time rights from Stan Lee Media for mid-six figures against a bit above $2 million. They apparently have the rights to a sequel if they decide within a certain time window.

Milius has had some talks with Big Arnold about returning, but in what capacity, no one knows yet. As for The Rock, he's going to be busy with his Scorpion King flick, so count him out. Also unknown is the true nature of this project: sequel? remake? Who knows? [Originally appeared in Variety, Hollywood Reporter.]

November 10, 2000... IGN FilmForce got the straight goods from director John Milius today about his new project, Conan 3. Earlier this week the industry trades said a number of things that clashed with earlier reports FF.N first broke about Milius' involvement.

Speaking to the legendary director, Milius told the site that yes, he's going to be the screenwriter for the picture. The Wachowskis will serve as exec producers as well as possibly second unit directors. However, the biggest unknown factor is when this is all going to go down since the W's are slated to start filming Matrix 2 and Matrix 3 by the spring of next year. "There are a lot of different factors," Milius tells IGN FilmForce. "We've got to deal with the boys and what they're going to do, and the strike."

And no, those rumors that The Rock would be taking over the character that Arnold Schwarzenegger made legendary just aren't true, so forget about it. "I don't know where they got that from," said Milius. Thank Crom!

November 17, 2000... Earlier this week IGN FilmForce reporter Chris Stewart was the first to break the news that Schwarzenegger was passing on doing Conan 3. We were there at the same press confernece and can confirm FilmForce's story. "No. Right now there's too many things on the table to do," Schwarzenegger said after being asked the question about whether he'll star in Conan 3.

Then we received this report today that -- if it's accurate -- has Arnold performing a 180 degree turn. "Arnold Schwarzenneger was on Starz!'s Hollywood One on One promoting The 6th Day earlier today and when asked about the lower body count that is in that movie it he said (not his exact words but damn near close), 'I'm sure when I do a new Conan the body count will huge.'Scooped by 'The Enigmatic Man'.]

Like our scooper says, now Schwarzenegger is sounding like the possibility of doing Conan 3 has at least some chance of happening, unlike what he told us last Sunday evening. So, what happened? Was there some kind of contact from Warner Bros., the studio that currently holds the Conan film rights? We highly doubt it. What we truly suspect is going on is nothing more than simple business mechanics on Arnie's part. Yes, he's got a lot of films on his plate, and he also expressed a desire to run for politics in the near future. But the side of show business that is rarely seen by outsiders does involve the business side of things; how much money a production is willing to pay to get the talent they want. Schwarzenegger has long "over-attached" himself to a variety of projects, and really, how many of those came to pass? Planet of the Apes is shooting with Mark Wahlberg as the leading man. Crusade was shelved. Total Recall 2 is either dead or the script needs major re-working, depending upon who you talk to about it. Just because a star might have expressed interest in a film doesn't mean they're going to be the one starring in it when the cameras begin rolling. After all, wasn't it less than a two years ago that things looked pretty bleak for another Terminator film ever happening...but we're pretty certain it wasn't so much as James Cameron giving his blessing to Arnold as it was producers Mario Kassar and Andrew Vajna getting the financial backing to endorse Schwarzenegger's check. In Hollywood, just as in real life, money is the king.

If WB is willing to pay Schwarzenegger his standard going price, we're sure he'll sign a contract to star in Conan 3. And if WB decides the money is better spent on the director, another star or the film, Schwarzenegger won't be in it. The rest is all a matter of interpretation and spin control.

December 31, 2000... As the year draws to a close, we wanted to take a moment per our readers' wishes to ponder on the question of: Now what? With Stan Lee Media currently staff-less after their rounds of layoffs and no longer in any producing capacity--what becomes of this project? As for right now, it's definitely in a holding pattern until somebody figures out what's going on with that thirteen cents a share business. But remember this: a franchise, good or bad, is hard to kill. This will get made someday -- and if not involving Stan Lee Media, then somebody. That's our current thought on the matter, but we'll wait to see what the final fate of SLEE is before we commit. [Pondering parties include Cth and a few Anonymous types.]

March 1, 2001... IGN FilmForce broke word yesterday about the title John Milius is presently using for his still-being-written Conan 3 screenplay: King Conan: Crown of Iron. We like it. [Originally appeared on IGN FilmForce.]

August 27, 2001... A script review of Conan 3 was published today on Aint It Cool News. "Moriarty" was enthusiastic about Milius' screenplay and reveals numerous new characters as well as details about the film's storyline. And yes, The Wizard character played by Mako in the first two Conan films does appear in Conan 3. [Originally appeared on Aint It Cool News.]

October 15, 2001... IGN FilmForce's Stax has posted his review of King Conan: Crown of Iron, dated from May of this year.

"Did I enjoy this blood-and-guts adventure epic? For the most part, yes, although I'll admit that this 'guy flick' embraces some of the worst aspects of man's nature," writes Stax in his positive review of the King Conan script. "That's the simplistic beauty of Conan, though, and this script makes no pretense about being anything other than the sword-wielding, ultra-macho valentine to barbarism that it is. If that's your bag, baby, then King Conan will surely outdo Gladiator in the blood-soaked battle department."

March 14, 2002... While breaking news of Schwarzenegger's deal to star and produce the remake of Westworld, today's Variety also adds that the action her has re-affirmed his desire to star in King Conan. [Variety.]

April 18, 2002... IGN FilmForce reports that the new draft of King Conan has been turned in, and the part of Kon, Conan's son and heir, has been amped up. As well, FilmForce has learned from its sources that Vin Diesel is said to be very interested in playing the part of Kon. [Originally appeared on IGN FilmForce.]

June 14, 2002... IGN FilmForce's Stax weighs in with his review of John Milius' rewrite of the King Conan screenplay. The good news is that Stax liked Milius' changes to his original work, calling the rewrite "more streamlined and focused, its plot less confusing and fragmented." Some characters, such as Conan's sidekick of the Wizard, have had their roles reduced but the on-screen carnage and sexual situations remain intact (fans of the original film will breath a sigh of relief.)

You can read Stax's review over at IGN Filmforce. [Thanks to Stax for the swordplay.]
