I can understand an emotional response to a wave of immigration - one always has a preference for people like oneself - but these emotional responses are to be mastered and not to be acted upon in a country where freedom is supposed to reign...

A fantastic example of the economic plusses of such immigration has happened about 3 miles from my home. Around Washington High School on the near-west side of Indianapolis there is a wonderful, vibrant, active business district that is full of Hispanic grocery stores, butchers, a Rent-A-Center, a pharmacy, 2 or 3 churches, car repair centers and, of course, the school. Before the influx of Hispanics it was an abandoned neighborhood full of drug dealers, hookers and crackhouses. The school was closed because there weren't enough kids around. The only businesses open were a used tire store and a strip club. The Hispanics moved into this neighbrorhood because they had very little money but a whole lot of "elbow grease". It worked better than any neighborhood revitalization plan sponsored by government could have ever worked.

I've heard some people wonder aloud why all of these "damn Mexicans" keep moving in. Let's see - there's plenty of work for people who don't mind physical labor. The pay is 5-10 times higher than it is in Mexico. The children of these ilegal aliens are allowed to go to school for free all the way through high school (you have to pay for high school in many Hispanic countries). Our economy is so stable that we get upset at 5% inflation (Peru at one point had 3,000% inflation in the late 80s/early 90s). And, we don't really chase down illegal aliens. For example, did you know that it is ilegal for a teacher to ask a student if their parents are illegal? And, if the teacher were to find out (logic dictates most of the Spanish-speaking ones are) it is illegal for the government to use information gleaned from a school source. Local police don't even have the power to enforce immigration law (this was a problem when one of the 9/11 terrorists was pulled over about a week before the 9/11 attack and the police officer did not know that he was living in the U.S. on an expired student visa).
