I had to read "The Killer Angels" for a college class and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I've read it 3 times, seen its movie, "Gettysburg" (not as good but amazing since it was filmed on site and there are no monuments in view anywhere - and if you've been to Gettysburg you know there are monuments all over the place - literally.)

It is one of the few books that I've consistently given as gifts to people, even if they are not Civil War buffs. Its a fabulous bit of writing!

Killer Angels was written as a response to an Englishman friend of Shaara's saying as they wandered the British site of the Battle of Hastings that America has no similar hallowed ground - no place where our history hinged on just the right actions being done, no place where everyone whispers as they wander the grounds - even if they are outside. Shaara taught at Gettysburg college and it struck him a few months later that he was looking at just such a place every day!

So - have you ever been to Gettysburg? Or any other Civil War site for that matter? I've been to several and I'm always looking for tips on the better ones to visit, since time and money are always at such a premium.
