Indeed, they did write about sex, but culturally they were squeamish about it (even in the time of Christ, nudity and sex were culturally taboo in the public forum - it is one of the reasons they Jews revolted in the late AD 60s - the Romans insisted upon putting statues of Roman gods in the Jewish Temple - not just pagan gods, but NAKED pagan gods), thus, my supposition, based on nothing more than a few stray facts and my own powers of supposition (remember, I have a "BS" from IU so I am a professional - stand back!) that the words "virgin" and "young girl" could have had a similar meaning. Since I do not read ancient Hebrew I don't know for sure...

In my own life, I have had many discussions with my nearly two year old daughter about her bowel movements, but I don't say to her, "Did you shit your pants?" Instead, we use the word "poopie." Why? because I am squeamish about the use of certain words in front of her, just as they were about certain phrases and topics in public.(remember, these were texts read in public and they were squeamish - the understanding was not lost to the adults, just certain terminology)
