Like I feared, there is no true answer - the economics of Hollywood has interfered with the story line. Lucas had to make Episode IV a stand-alone movie and some things were not portrayed well in order to make the movie work by itself. Plus, he didn't really have all 6 scripts laid out so all of the inconsistencies could be ironed out.

I'd say Leia's "foul stench" comment was just an insult - she's good for that sort of thing ("walking carpet", "flyboy", "short for a stormtrooper", etc.)

AS to Luke & Leia being brother and sister in episode IV, I do believe you're right. I know when we were kids we played with the action figures like they were already boyfriend and girlfriend until we found out she liked Han. The expected romance between Luke and Leia was part of the whole fairy tale thing ... the heroic farmboy gets the Princess in the end. For a while, I believed Han was the pne referred to by Yoda as having the force - after all, he's a great pilot...
