"G is for Gumshoe"
Author: Sue Grafton
Published: 1991 by Crest

Well, as you know if you read my last review, I've been having a hard time of it, bookwise. So, I did the logical thing, which was go for a book that I knew would make the cut. There is a whole series of books written by Sue Grafton called the Kinsey Milhone mysteries, also the alphabet mysteries (perhaps an homage to Bradbury?). I knew this book would be a solid book since I've read A-F in the series. However, I was pleasently surprised. I'd give the series as a whole a "C", but this book introduced a new character, another detective who is "hired" to protect Kinsey's life from a deranged hitman. How deranged is he? He brings his five year old along for the hits. But, hey, he's not all bad - he yells at the estranged mom because she lets the boy have junk food.

This book has a more complicated plot than the others (there are 2 simoultaneous cases and several subplots) and the new male character was an interesting addition. Unfortunately, it looks bad for his continuation in the series since he left to work in Germany and she's in California. Hopefully, Grafton will have this guy fly back into the storylines often.

I give this book a "B+."
