Subject: Bike polo team play in France

A squad of five fine young ( middle aged) men represented Scotland in the Autumn cup tournament in Le Havre during the September weekend. This was our first International game since adopting the new International rules. Unfortunately the french have a different set of rules. Their game is a mixture of hurling and polo and is played with a handball?
Confused we certainly were !!! It was virtually impossible for us to hit the ball any distance with our equestrian mallets , plus everytime we got near the goals they ran into us from behind . The harder they knocked us off the quicker we got back up. We suffered defeat in all but one game 3-1 , 5-4 , 3-3 , 5-0. The draw was against last years French champions & contained half of the French team which got silver in World champs this year , so a morale victory. The 5-0 defeat was final game where we were down to 3 fit players due to illness & injury. We will seek revenge next year when the French will play in Scotland under international rules. We were the first non French team to play in a French rules tournament & were treated very well by all concerned. An excellent if not somewhat bruising experience.
