Puppies usually do not permanently raise their ears until the fourth or sixth month, and sometime not until later. At a trot, the dog covers still more ground and moves powerfully but easily with a beautiful co-ordination of back and limbs so that, in the best examples, the gait appears to be the steady motion of a well-lubricated machine. Aloof and dignified, yet gay except when excited, when they are semipricked. Hocks well bent and rather close to ground, wide but straight fore and aft. Feet hard and close, rather more hare than cat-feet, well knuckled up with good strong claws.
This is the only breed of dog possessing a blue-black tongue, and authorities claim this gives credence to the "original" theory. Teeth strong and level, with a scissors bite; should neither be overshot, nor undershot. He's been used as a cattle drover, as draught dog, and ratter and in wartime he's served as a sentinel. Muzzle should be long and powerful, never snipey; the lips clean. Pasterns should be straight. Chest should not be too wide, but very deep and capacious. Stifle should be moderately well bent. Cowhocks.
In 1858 Sir Dudley Majoribanks, later Lord Tweedmouth, a Scotsman, was on a visit to the English seaside town of Brighton. While there he attended a circus and was so taken by a troupe of performing Russian sheepdogs he tried to buy a pair. The dogs� trainer would not sell a pair, claiming that this would break up the troupe. Whereupon Majoribanks bought the lot, took them home to his estate, �Guichan,� in Scottish Border country, bred them and thus created the Golden Retriever.
