To all members of RNSWCC. Urgent.

The following message was sent to me as the Liaison Officer of the RNSWCC at 10.49am today, 17/10/2003 from the Secretary, Virginia, of the RNSWCC. Please read thoroughly.

"On the October long weekend, at the NSW State Obedience Trials, a dog was brought onto the grounds which was carrying the "Corona" virus. That dog has since died, one other dog has died and 8-9 dogs are showing symptoms and are in a serious condition.

To be seen as taking a pro-active role in this situation, and on advice from Dr. Robert Zammit, BVSc, the RNSWCC grounds will be sprayed today and from this time on the grounds will be shut down to ALL dogs until the weekend of 25-26 October 2003. This action is taken to ensure that no further incidents or reports of the infection are received.

Signs will be placed around the fences and around the front gate and at the Front Desk.

For those staff who own dogs, it is strongly suggested that when you go home each night for the next ten days, before handling your dog you should wash your hands in household bleach (diluted to disinfectant strength) and remove your shoes, which should also be sprayed.

Further, you should be aware of any changes your dog may display, such as looking poorly, quiet, vomiting or diarrhoea. If your dog should show these symptoms or if you have any concerns you should immediately take it to the vet.

There is a vaccination for "Corona" virus which has been around for quite some time and it is strongly recommended that all dogs be vaccinated for this virus - it is a 2 pronged injection."
