Hi,
I would like to ask the listers their ideas on excision arthroplasty (removing the ball on the femur) versus hip replacement on a 4-year-old dog who has a badly dislocated hip.
Before I go any further, I would like to say that the dog’s breeder has been totally helpful and has been only too willing to give us information, opinions , and experience regarding this procedure. But, as you can imagine, it is a big decision to make and we would like to be as informed as possible.
Toto jumped out of the back of the 4WD while it was doing 70kmh (PLEASE, I do NOT want to have people writing to me about the pros and cons of crating dogs in cars, that is a separate matter), and dislocated his hip. The vets put the joint back together and put a wire through the ball and screws on the outside of the socket to be able to screw the wire in tighter if necessary, and hold the joint in place.
While things looked OK for a while, we eventually decided that he wasn’t healing as fast as we would have thought and the x-ray yesterday revealed the hip is again dislocated, and the ball is lithic (lack of blood supply will eventually lead to it crumbling).
The options are excision arthroplasty or hip replacement. The muscles around the hip joint are, understandably, atrophied at present because he has not been able to properly use the leg for 7 weeks.
I would appreciate comments from anyone who has had any experience with these procedures in their dogs or even in other breed dogs.
And my apologies to anyone who gets sick of reading this on various RR lists.
Thanks in advance
Cheers,
Margaret
