IN SEARCH OF GHOSTS, DEMONS AND SPIRITS -
Narendra Nayak.

Ever since childhood I was interested in ghosts, spirits, demons' and their various manifestations, forms and powers. When a
group of like minded people joined and founded the Dakshina Kannada Rationalist Association in 1976, we had a proper
organisation with the exclusive functions of educating the people about superstitions, paranormal phenomena and miracles. This
organisation also conducts investigations of such reported phenomena. These are some of the finding of ours in the last thirteen
years.

JAKANI OR THE UNMARRIED FEMALE GHOST AT ULLAL

The first opportunity that was presented to us to investigate ghosts was in 1976. We, the members of the newly formed
Rationalist Association were confronted with the story of a ghost haunting a beach near Mangalore. The ghost was said to be
that of a Jakani - an unmarried woman who had met an untimely end - this spirit was said to derive a vicarious pleasure in
possessing men, particularly unmarried ones causing intense arousal followed by ejaculation! One of the local newspapers took
pleasure in describing in detail experiences of some of the men who had spent the night on the beach to investigate this
phenomenon. Our team consisting of only unmarried youths spent a night on the beach in expectation of the experience to be
provided by the ghost - and returned the next morning a dejected lot. Alas! None of us came anywhere near beng possessed
by a Jakani! Later however we came to know through very reliable sources that we were indeed very lucky not to have met
any ghosts and their ilk. That particular stretch of the beach it turned out, was the landing site for a smuggling gang and this gang
had cooked up ghostly tales to keep out the local population and scare away any potential busybodies. We developed a cold
sweat imagining our fate if we were to fall into the clutches of such a gang! The first episode ended wth a nonexistent ghost and
a lucky escape for the budding ghost busters!

For a number of years we could investigate only some small time ghostly phenomena and none of the ghosts lived upto our
expectations. However, as they say things started looking up on the "spiritual" scene after a few years.

THE ADYANADKA KUTTICHATHAN

In 1986, we were challenged in one of the local newspapers which was well known as a promoter of such dubious
sensationalism - to investigate the doings of a ghost at a nearby village.

Adyanadka village was about 50 km. from Mangalore. Here a Muslim residence cum hotel was said to be haunted by a spirit.
This spirit specialised in throwng stones at the houseshop. The degree of manifestation was not a constant. In the day time only
small pebbles used to be thrown. However, after nightfall, the spirit became definitely stronger - stones would come flying -
dozens of them - some as large as a man's fist. The shop keeper proudly displayed to us some of the larger ones which were
religiously preserved. He also assured us of the unique nature of the stones - his contention was that such stones were not to be
seen anywhere in those parts! (Of course a later examination of the surrounding showed us hundreds of stones of the same
type). Having time to kill until sunset our team went around the place interviewing people. I showed them some "miracles"
materializing Holy Ash, performing "arathi" with a piece of camphor on the palm and a few such items. Remarks could be heard
from the audience that a set of Tantriks had come to exorcise the spirit from the place!

By sunset our investigations were complete and we had succeeded in identifying the ghost. It turned out that behind the
hotel-shop residence of the muslim, a family of four lived. This family was of two children - a boy of 8 years and a girl of
around 12 years and their parents. The lady of the house was highly ambitious and not satisfied with the then status of her
husband which was that of a small time farmer. She had larger ambitions in mind. In fact, the whole family had conspired to
evict the present occupants and take over their set up! This was confirmed by the land lord of the shop who informed us that
these people had in fact asked him to evict the present tenants and had promised him a higher rent.

The modus operandi of the ghosts was simple - the day time operations which consisted of throwing pebbles was handled by
the daughter of the family - a sprightly young girl. The night operations were in the hands of her father who would fortify himself
with spirits of the organic variety from the local arrack shop before proceeding on his mission of stone throwing. The brave
young men of the village had investigated the phenomenon by standing in a group at the spot where the stones used to fall.
Upset by our investigations, the younger ghost called it a day and stopped her operations while the older one made his way to
arrack shop to regain his lost spirits. Our group maintained a vigil round the spot for a couple of hours. At the end of this period
we made an announcement that we had found out who the culprits were, but wanted some concrete evidence, which we said
would be provided if any more stones were thrown. We instructed the assembled crowd that in case any more stones were
thrown, they were to handle them with a cloth and put them in a plastic bag. The finger prints of the culprit would provide us
with the required evidence and we would see it that the culprit would be put away for a couple of years!

That was the last of the Kuttichathan of Adyanadka. We handed out reports to the local newspapers and with a warning to
challengers not to waste our time with such petty ghosts! We stated that in the future we would investigate only true 'ghosts' and
not such foolishly obvious works of men.

BRAHMACHARI'S SPIRIT IN THE HOUSE

One of my friends whom I shall identify only as Suresh was a very intelligent young man and the only child of his parents. After
finishing his graduation he joined an engineering firm as a salesman and did well in his career. Sadly, he met with an accident
during picnic and died an untimely death. His spirit however was to remain on this earth and trouble his relatives as later events
showed.

In 1987, a year after the sad demise of Suresh, one of his relatives came to consult our association with a problem. His
problem was that of strange happenings in his house. The household consisted of aged grandparents and a grandson around 13
years of age. The manifestations of the spirit were many. Objects would mysteriously appear and disappear. Strange things like
the gas cylinder ejecting its regulator, cough syrup finding its way to the pot of cooked rice, mysterious messages from the
spiritual world, became common occurences. The messages of the spiritual world were however very unique. All of them
demanded one thing or the other - but the beneficiary of the demand in each case without exception was the grandson! The
messages were very specific - in fact one of them clearly specified the make of a bicycle, the address of the shop where it was
sold and also the extra fittings required. At another time the message clearly stated the exact nature of repairs required for this
and even specified the shop where the repairs were to be carried out to the bicycle.

Going through the history, it was obvious to us as to who the culprit was. But, this had not struck the grandparents or their
advisers. Instead of thinking clearly about the problem, they had chosen to take the advise of mantriks (sorcerers), astrologers
and oracles. All of them had suggested that this was the work of a brahmachari ghost and had collected their fat fees to
exorcise the same. However, their techniques had not worked and hence the rationalists solution was sought. When told of the
culprit, the grandparents were reluctant to believe us. But, after keeping the boy under very close observation, they were able
to confirm our findings. The boy was feeling hemmed in by the old fashioned ideas of his grandparents and had created a ghost
to get his requirements. The boy was told very clearly that he had been caught in the act and he was sent to his parents. After
this the spirit of Suresh disappeared from his relative's house!
