Hi Maria;
I just saw your posting and wanted to give you some words of encouragement. I too started my pet sitting business while I was working as a full- time vet tech. and also worked in an animal E.R. as well. So, I can appreciate where you are from many points of view. I got my first pet sitting job from a client who visited the clinic I worked at 15yrs ago. I thought at the time I was just helping out a sweet person with two terrific dogs; little did I know where this would take me. Don't be too concerned about not having the phone ringing off the hook right now. That will come in time. As most of us can attest; we'd give anything for a day off or some time to ourselves. So, use this slow time right now to read read read and develop your business sense. Go to the local library and read books onstarting your own business and anything else business wise you can get your hands on. You may even give thought to interning with a fellow-sitter who can show you the day to day goings on in a business like this. I like other sitters believe in keeping things simple. I do not use contracts, and forms. I've been working this way for many years and it works for me. My brochure that I give to new clients is very thorough as to what my policies are. I try not to let my heart rule my head and although hard at times ithas helped to keep my biz. uncomplicated. I also run a cleaning business too. So, my days are very full as I do this all by myself. I post flyers and biz cards where ever I can, libraries, daycare centers, schools, hair salons, and even coffee shops and grocery stores. As sexist as this may sound the majority of people who care for the family pet are women so I cater to them and go where they will be. I've gotten more results from this type of advertising and word-of-mouth. I've only advertised in the paper once in 15yrs and the results were miserable. Hang in thereyou'll find your groove and what works best for you. You'll constantly be fine tuning how you run your business as the years pass. Just look at me. I only found this site a year ago and after fifteen yrs in the biz. I'm still learning new things from my other hard-working professionals. Stick with this site you'll learn alot. Best of luck to you. Karen
