Subject: Triple N Ranch to be changed soon!

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will consider a rule change at its April 3 meeting that would remove Triple N Ranch Wildlife Management Area (WMA) from the special-opportunity hunt format and make it a part of adjacent Bull Creek WMA.

“The public did not get an opportunity to hear about this change during the commission’s normal bi-annual public input and rule proposal process,” said Dr. Allan Egbert, FWC executive director. “The reason is because the new proposal is a reversal from the recommendation made by agency staff to the Commission at its November 2001 meeting.”

Currently, Triple N Ranch is part of the FWC’s Special-Opportunity Hunt Program which allows a limited number of hunters a greater chance of hunting success and a hunt that more resembles that of a private hunting lease, than a typical public lands hunt, for a fraction of the cost of a private lease.

A one-week special-opportunity deer hunt is offered in November, and three one-week turkey hunts are offered in March and April. The limited time frames and numbers of hunters enable biologists to manage the area for a higher quality of wildlife and more of it.

If the Commission gives the nod to the proposed change, the hunting schedule on Triple N Ranch WMA would mimic that of Bull Creek WMA. That would mean that general gun deer season would occur from early November through early January, with minimal quota restrictions. Spring turkey season would be from mid-March through the latter part of April, with no quota restrictions.
