FWC PASSES WILDLIFE FEEDING RESTRICTION

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission passed a new rule today to prohibit intentional feeding of wild bears, foxes, raccoons and sandhill cranes.

The new rule, which takes effect in early May, is the result of citizen complaints that unnatural feeding is altering the natural feeding behavior of wildlife and is posing a threat to human safety.

Foxes and raccoons are two of the three most common carriers of rabies in Florida. Also, bears that learn to associate people with food often seek out human population centers and pose threats to people and property.

Commissioners included sandhill cranes in the rule because of the aggressive nature of the birds while nesting and because of reports of cranes acting aggressively around families involved in outdoor recreation.
