HB 1158 would also raise the deer limit from eight to 12 and start the deer season one week earlier


HB 1158 — Only two weeks into the 2002 legislative session, the number of bills that could introduce major changes to Georgia’s hunting regulations is increasing. Joining two different deer-baiting bills is House Bill 1158, introduced on January 31, which is a three-way alteration of deer hunting in Georgia: a longer season, a bigger bag limit, and a statewide antler restriction on bucks.

Under the proposed changes, the antlered-buck bag limit would still be two per season, but at least one of the bucks must have four or more points one inch or longer on one side of its rack — a statewide quality-buck restriction.


Further, the antlerless deer limit would be raised to 10 per season (currently, a hunter can shoot six antlerless deer and two antlered bucks or a total of eight antlerless deer).


Finally, the open window in the calendar during which the Board of Natural Resources can hold a deer season would be expanded from September 15 to September 8, allowing DNR to begin the season one week earlier than previously possible.


Another less significant change is that the bill also expands the potential bear season one week earlier.
