The "free for all" already doesn't' apply everywhere and that's one of the if not the main problems with the public land hunting now. There is too much public land set up in quota's, special quota's, special opportunity and no hunting period now. The more they open for regular hunting the better and less pressured regular management areas will be and therefore many more people will benefit.
The state forces you to hunt management areas by putting all public land into a so called management area. The least they could do is open up the land they got.
I hunt Greenswamp (east) and the state bought some land that boarders it (Hampton Ranch) 3 yrs ago and said they were going to add it to Greenswamp.
Well, it's still not open ... except to the people hunting it who are not concerned with getting caught....I hear gun shots way back in there almost every day I hunt Greenswamp...so either Swift Mud employees or someone else with a way in and out who aren't concerned with anyone catching them...are definitely hunting it. I know it's not anybody going across the fence because the shots are too deep into the property.
The funny part is that a game warden worked the fence line for a wk stopping everybody he saw telling them not to go across the fence that he would catch them....the next wk the shots started and he was never seen back in there again.
Anyway it's not open for the public....and if the state and Swift Mud has there way it won't be...at the most it will be another pay to hunt special opportunity.
I say open all available land and give hunters more places to hunt so everybody doesn't have to pile in on top of each other.
It shouldn't be about helping a very small percentage of lucky people get a good hunting experience at the expense of the vast majority having to be crammed into overhunted areas.
Seems like something is wrong when you have an overcrowding problem with public hunting land and instead of adding more land to hunt and help the majority, they take land away for a lucky few and make things worse for the majority.
Personally I don't give a damn....because I'm fortunate enough to have time and can find good areas with whatever is available, but it just don't seem to make sense to me the way the state handles it.
