Subject: Efforts to revive tourism

I have three questions eating at me in the current dreadful tourism season.

Why is it that virtually nothing is being done to try to spur a recovery of the loss in the tourism sector? Other destinations have slashed prices drastically, advertised heavily and are successfully attracting visitors. Is it that there is so much arrogance that we in Cayman don't need to do the same? Family and friends in the US say that the Cayman Islands have "dropped off the radar" as far as advertising, with almost EVERY other Caribbean destination plastering the airwaves with ads! What's up with this?

Why is it that suddenly ships are not allowed to anchor at Spotts Jetty? Does the government not consider the massive economic losses suffered by those who rely heavily on cruise ship passengers when forcing ships to "pass by" because they cannot anchor there? This is a recent development, as in the past there were no such restrictions. I fish in those same waters often, and there is virtually no reef there at all to "damage" so why DAMAGE or DESTROY the local economy to protect a non-existent asset?

Lastly, why is there so much collusion with this "Land & Sea Cooperative" which is impacting other tourist attractions in such a devastating way? The net effect is to strangle those not involved by diverting tours from their traditional destinations. Since when can such an organisation justify an economic monopoly on the dwindling business volume? Oh, I forgot, monopolies are a way of life in the Cayman Islands, silly me!

Blah

PS, I vote yes for YuppiCay, and no for YuppyCay!
