Subject: Creating A North Carolina(and surround areas) MMA Community

Hi everyone, I'm Kelvin Hunt the owner of http://mma4real.net

I reside in NC and try to provide news/fight results on all of the events in NC and surrounding states as well as cover the major events like the UFC. I initially found this forum by trial and error a month or so ago, and it seems to not have much 'life' if you will. I'd like to create a place on the net for the MMA fans of NC and surrounding areas to come to and network and post things about things happening locally as well as discuss the major shows that happen nationally.

If I added a forums section to my website how many of you would be interested in joining and posting about upcoming MMA events in NC and the surrounding states? Would you be interested in posting information about upcoming fighters, up and coming MMA fight camps in NC?

I'm aware of Team Roc and the TFTC Academy that just moved to Garner, NC(I live in Fuquay-Varina). However, I'm not familiar with the many schools and whatnot popping up everywhere.

Feel free to shoot me an email with suggestions or just respond in this thread etc. Thanks

Off the top of my head, ECSA (East Coast Submission Academy) in Durham, GAMMA (in Greenville), Ringskillz (sanford still I think) Ring lords (cary), Crossfit (raleigh) A team ROC in Southern Pines (not sure of the actual name of gym/school, the one Roy runs), Team ROC in Eden NC, ROC in Fayetville (the one where Greg is), Not sure where Spencer's gym is, but a ROC close to hillsborough or Mebane, ROC in Charlotte, Black belt USA in Charlotte, Alliance in Charlotte (not sure how much they are MMA though, pure BJJ last I heard), Hurst BJJ in Concord, Huss's Hybrid something (anthony huss in Hickory), Superior Martial Arts (Roger Carroll) in Hickory (used to be not sure if that's where he still is), Place in Greensboro I think, dont know the name of his gym but Kevin Pyles (could be slaughtering his name) runs it, Evolution in Wilmington/wrightsville beach, New bern BJJ, NBS gym in Raleigh (mostly kickboxing, but a few MMA guys) Wrights extreme martial arts in Jacksonville, Emac in edenton, La Boxing in Cary.

There are more, but all of those have been around for a few years and produce competitors often. That should get you started if you are looking to contact some of the people running the gyms and want to get their input/involvement as most of them have web sites.

Hi kelvin,

As a fan of MMA blogs and communities, let me share my humble opinions with you.

#1. The wordpress style of your site seems a little one dimensional. Not a lot of room for expansion or growth. It could be spruced up with a custom logo or theme maybe?

#2. Your writing style seems to be very "reporter-like". I'd like to see a little more humor and editorial freedom in your opinions. I love Cage Potato because of the attitude in the articles, I'm pleased when I find myself chuckling at the off-humor jokes they throw around over there.

#3. Building a reader base will take a shitload of time unless you have tons of money to dump into advertising or the ability to get the "scoop" on a good story. If you can 'break' some news, add "digg" links to the article, then you might just start bringing in some good traffic.

GOOD LUCK!

Rodney,

Thanks for the constructive criticism man. Actually, I'm in the process of upgrading everything you pointed out in regards to the website itself and hopefully those changes will be taking place shortly. In terms of writing style, I agree and some of that is just my personality I suppose. However, I'll take that into consideration as the blog continues to grow. Thanks for the support and continue to drop by the site.!

I think you should interview local trainers and fighters. You should essentially focus on representing the local MMA community because everyone is going to go to Sherdog/MMA weekly ect. for their mainstream information.

Rick, that's the plan and in fact the new layout that I will have(soon hopefully) will allow fans just like you to come and share information, share your own thoughts about a local event, etc.

Jerry Moreno still teaches out of New Bern. He got his black belt from Luis Palhares. They train out of the Craven County fairgrounds complex. Jerry is very serious about his BJJ and has produced some monster fighters. Here is the website:

New Bern BJJ

Also we have Jake Whitfield now teaching out of Goldsboro. Jake is a brown belt under Royce Gracie and a great grappler. I believe he was ranked #1 at No Gi in the nation by NAGA several years ago when he was tearing through their tournament circuit. He also has several MMA fights under his belt. Here is his schools website:

Triangle Jiu Jitsu/

Also ABI's MMA Center is in Goldsboro. I don't know too much about them, but they have been around for a few years. From the looks of things they have a pretty big facility located just off of Berkely Blvd. Here is their site with a bit more info:

ABIs MMA

In Jacksonville there is Club Jiu Jitsu which has been around for a little while. They have guest instructors come in and teach from time to time. I know that some of the guys from the USMC wrestling team have been out there to teach techniques and roll in a BJJ format. They seem to have a good thing going. The director of the club is the wife of an active duty marine. She seems to be very passionate about the sport and has actually promoted a couple of MMA events in the area. Here is their website:

Club Jiu Jitsu

Those are some of the places out here in the east. Our area of the state is still fairly dry when it comes to good MMA & BJJ training so we tend to get a lot less publicity than Charlotte or the Triangle area. I hope this helps you out.

I notice that I get few readers from the forum here and I really appreciate it. I just wanted to let everyone know that my site/blog got invited to join the SportsBlog Nation(same network as BloodyElbow). So I will now have the platform and technology to do a bunch of things that I can't currently do now. It'll also grant you the reader an opportunity to do a lot of things you can't do now. I'm migrating my old stuff over to the new site now, and hopefully everything will be up and running in a week or so. I'll provide a link to the finished product once we are done with the transition. I hope you'll continue to support me in helping promote MMA as well as MMA in North Carolina and the surrounding areas.
