GREENVILLE:
G-Vegas has 2 schools that I know of. You have All American MA which is a Royce Affiliate and the Gustavo Machado school.
All American MA is ran by James Speight and classes are taught by James and Dr. Chris Mann. They are Royce Gracie Blue Belt and Purple Belt, respectively. Chris Mann also holds a Black belt in Judo. Great guys with a great group of grapplers. James' training philosophy is very much a no BS philosophy and has worked very well in his team's favor.
Gustavo Machado Affiliate is ran by Eric Askew with help from the Pendergrass Bros. I am not sure if the Pendergrass Bros teach there though. They post on this forum so you could get more info from them than from me. From what I have heard Eric is good grappler. I haven't really met him in person or heard too much about this school
other than from the net, so it's hard for me to tell ya if the training is good compared to other schools. He used to train at All American before branching out with another group.
KINSTON:
Has basically one grappling school. Strouds Martial Arts on Vernon Ave is an old school traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu, Judo, and karate Dojo. They are not as "mat oriented" as a lot of the non traditional Jiu Jitsu schools, as theirs is not a Brazilian style. However, you will be hard pressed to find a better group of peopl who are all eager to learn. If you check them out, ask for Guy Heath. He is a great guy and always willing to trade techniques and roll with anyone. Tell him that I recommended you.
JACKSONVILLE:
You'll be lucky to find anything here. There used to be a BJJ gi based program at Wright karate Center, but I don't think it exists anymore. Some of the marines also used to have an NHB club that practiced during the weekdays. I think most of them have deployed overseas though.
OTHER AREAS OF INTEREST:
New Bern does have a group of guys who train in BJJ. I have seen a few of them in tournaments and they seem to have a really good outlook on things. They are under Luis Togno who is a black belt with the Alliance group. If I am not mistaken, a couple of their guys have fought in some amateur MMA events as well.
I help run a group of wrestlers in the Deep run area of Lenoir County (15 miles from Kinston). We work all angles when it comes to submissions and grappling. We use whatever techniques work. Folkstyle, BJJ, Sombo, Catch, whatever...we don't care as long as it works. You're welcome to stop in anytime. Just click on my name and send me an e-mail.
Hope this helps you out. God bless.
Steve
