Hi. I live in Northeastern North Carolina now. I'm originally from Seattle, Washington. Does anyone have any info on the Karate style of the late Mas. Oyama, Kyokushin-Kai? I have heard of one man who teaches it in this area named Kenny Buffaloe. Has anyone ever heard of him and what are his credentials in this art? Has he ever trained in Japan under Oyama or any other top Japanese teachers? Your help is greatly appreciated as I'm only interested in training in a serious, no-nonsense Dojo(Training School) with likeminded people. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Hello Terry,

I would contact John Ormsby. He is the karate instructor at the Bemjo Martial Arts Center which used to be named the Bill McDonald Karate School. His karate club is the oldest club in Eastern North Carolina and he knows just about everyone. He would be able to tell you more. His club is located in Greenville, NC. They also have one of the premier kickboxing gyms in the nation. They have produced seven world champion kickboxers. They also have a stellar boxing program and I teach judo and jujitsu at the gym as well. You can contact John Ormsby at 252-752-5192.

Good Luck,

Jason Russell

Hey I know Kenny, Kenny trained for at least 5 years in Japan. I have not trained with him personally, but some of my students have and do. And I have only heard good things from him.

While in Japan he trained under Shigeru (sp?) who was Masoyama’s Top Student.

Kenny’s Phone number to his school is 252-589-4281 and it is in Warrenton NC.

Good Luck

Thank you so much for the information. My Japanese friends here in North Carolina tell me it's highly unusual for anyone here, especially an American, to be training in such a harsh form of Karate as Kyokushin. They say Kyokushin is very repected in Japan by everyone, including the common people. Known for it's power and intensity. They say they cannot imagine Kyokushin being taught in rural North Carolina. How successful is Kenny Buffaloe's Dojo in Warrenton? I tried the phone number, but only got an answering machine. Further info is greatly appreciated.
