“It will purify all the belts so they can be traced”
meaning my belt isn’t really the color it is? I don’t got a pure belt?

the NCBJJF says they are here to
“certify and endorse schools and instructors qualified to teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu”

So I am not qualified to teach, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, per your organization? if that is right, ok that is cool.

I cant teacher either. :-)

No seriously he just said all belts would be signed by thier instructor, the instructor has to sign the paper work and thier black belt instructors must be tracable etc.... This is just what I am told.

James... example... the average person that doesnt know you or any other instructor in the Carolinas doesnt know if you are qualified to teach. so they can go to the NCBBJF and see if you or said person is actually qualified to teach. Any one can see who is actually qualified to ref at tournaments. Level 1 is for purple, blue and white belts meaning they can only ref there belt level and below...
Level2 is for brown and Blck belts meaning they can ref all belt levels..
the belt graduation system of the NCBJJF is the same belt system used in Brazil by the CBJJ ( that is run by Carlinhos Gracie )
the tournament rules and weights are also the same. that way no matter what federation tournament you go to.. may it be in Cali, Fl, GA, NY, TN, or even in Brazil.
everyone needs to get together and help organize this sport.
we have stopped 3 tae kwon do academied that was saying the taught brazilian jiujitsu in the area. ( true the instructor was a blue belt in BJJ but people was under the inpretion that he was more than that cause he would wear his tae kwon do Balck belt when he was teaching the BJJ class. so the average person that doesnt know, get trapped in the illusion.
become part of the future of this Sport.

Hey Congrats Joe! You put in a lot of time and energy into the sport and you deserve all the credit you get. I'm truly happy for you.

As too different the Federations and what not..well, I have been around for a long time and the reality is that people will do whatever they want too. I can't tell you how many people claim to teach JKD and Kali that are not certified. It bothered me for a while but then I guess I finally understood that there is nothing you can really do about it. TKD and Karate guys as well as every other style has been borrowing stuff from others as long as I can remember. As a matter of fact, I trained with Rigan Machado and he had ripped off some Shooto legs set ups and attacks and now claimed it was BJJ! I know this because he got them from Erik Paulson. John Machado took some sarong techniques from Silat/Kali that he learned from Sifu Dan Inosanto and they are now required to know before you can get your Black belt from him. This is going to happen and if your not ok with it..well, you better get used to it! LOL

People are always going to claim to have something they don't (ie. Black belt in BJJ or JKD instructor rank) and this is won't ever change. Like it or not, wrong or right.

I hope that these Federations both grow and help the area produce more well run events. I have known Luis Togno for a while and I know he is a very talented Martial Artist as well as a great guy. I haven't had a chance to workout with Joe yet, though I have only heard great things and hope that we can get together sometime and have some fun.

The sport needs good guys like you two in order to set up and create well run events. I think they made a good choice back in Brazil picking Joe.

Anyway, I think there is plenty of room for anyone who wants to improve the Martial arts in NC, not matter who it is..Anthony ,who busts his ass on new events, Luis or Joe and everyone else I forgot to mention!

sorry for the rambling, too many punches to the head!

Thanks,
Scott Shields

A voice of reason, finally. Good post, Scott. I too know Huss, Togno, and Hurst, and I think they are all very well-intentioned and very talented. Leave the politics to the politicians.

Great post Scott & Ryan...
Luis thanks you guys!! and everyone else that helps this sport grow regardless of what Federation you chose to support. Anthony Huss is another person that Luis would like to thank for his hard work...
The Bottom line is Both Organizations have the same goal and this will only help BJJ in the State of NC, well only if people quit being so political and help the Sport Grow.
Its not about the people running the Federations, its about the Sport that we love...

hey I wish both the best of luck, no politcs here, but

the bottom line, the belt represents the school your train at, you train at a crappy school you will get crappy training. and the students from the most part will be crappy in comppitition that is if they compete at all. some school s don’t and that is ok too. my students do compete and i let that, their ability, speak for its self.

and robert how did you stop the TKD school, i have a blue belt under Royce Gracie, i teach BJJ and do wear my blue belt during BJJ class, i don’t hide that but as i see it per your web site only purple and above should teach?

Like I said before, no politics here, but I am asking what other will be thinking.

I am glad it got questions going it is exactly for that, one other thing that it will bring as of NOW any american can go to Brazil to compete in the Mundials but every Brazilian has to win a qualifier... The Pan Ams and the Bud cup will eventually be qulifiers for people to have to place to go to Brazil to compete.

All other reps will help other events to make them grow and will support others to make all tourneys better and more pure. Not to help one toureny but all that are invlolved.

Hi James. Thanks... What we did as far as the TKD school was we had a meeting with the schools instructors. Talked to them about what they was doing. We didnt stop them from teaching BJJ, we explain the problem of teaching BJJ wearing another arts Black belt. They understood and agreed. Once they earn purple belt they will be apply for there academy memberships.

As far as "only purple and above should teach" thats not true.
only purple and above need to apply to be an endorsed academy.
a Blue belt can teach but they are considered as Clubs since the Blue belt is an entry level belt. Meaning that he has knowledge of the basic fundamentals. We are not taking nothing away from the Blue belts that are teaching in the Carolinas. It takes an average of 6 - 8 month or a year of good training and you can get your blue belt. more or less right?? thats just not enough to allow a guy that get his Blue in lets say 7 months at some seminar, and have him be endorsed to run a BJJ school. But a Purple belt has put in his TIME and is qualified to run a BJJ program with a more careful eye than the younger belt level. Hope this clarifies some things.

Hope you and the rest help support the Federations buy joining. ( athlete membership and academy memberships )at

One reason why I left Judo was because of all of the politics. I was a ranked black belt under my instructor and made several trips to Japan to train at the Kodokan over the years. That, along with a wrestling and Sambo background helped me to stomp out many of the guys from a more "political" organization during competition. However, my instructors rankings were never "officially" recognized and therefore I was told by others that I could not wear the black belt. I earned it. I kept it. And my instructor continued to teach his Judo to people willing to learn. "Political recognition" or not.

Good intentions can go a long way. Jut don't let this turn into a pissing contest. You might be pointed toward the wind.

Pretty funnny! I think that it is always good to remember that guys like Tito, Frank Shamrock and Ken are white belts in BJJ. Erik Paulson is a blue belt and I have seen him catch Rigan! Belts really are a subjective thing. A black belt means that "the guy who gives it to you" thinks that you have enough knowledge and skill to meet "his" standard of black belt. Some other guy might think it is not enough, others, too much. Very subjective indeed. We have all seen guys at tournaments that have blue belts on that should be in the brown belt division, as well as looking at black belts and thinking.."what happened? how did that guy get a black belt?"

I have seen TKD green belts smoke high level TKD black belts and I have seen white belts rip through BJJ black belts. It's all subjective and should be taken with a grain of salt. I am not dismissing someones acheivement in earning a belt or rank. I think that is very important, like goal setting. I respect the guy who has trained hard and earned a rank in whatever style or rank either in..TKD, BJJ, JKD, or whatever. None are better than any of the other.

Anyway, I'm rambling again, sorry about that!

Thanks,
Scott Shields

More will be announced at the Bud event Sept 30th & Oct 1st.I personally want to generally make good events grow like Guys and Anthonys and all the good ones and this will be an avenue for that. It is the International Federation by Barra Gracie Carlos Gracie Jr and will benifit all that get thier cards (like a drivers license) and will bring support to all good events. If people dont want to simply don't,those that do I will do all in power to promote and help promote thier events and schools.

I am just wondering is this a way that the Federation is using to keep a sense of Brazil in The us, BJJ is slowely being replaced with AJJ. Many Americans now have their belts and Blackbelts, Grapppler's quest and NAGA are replacing the PAN AMS as the top Tournments. BJJ.org recognizes peoples belts from instructors and so does the MAT when your on the mat, you know who is a _____belt and who is not.

Will it ever happen??? Luis said its to late. but we can try and help organize the Sport...

Thats why the west coast is growing together rather than bickering about whos doing what. Dont get me wrong they have there politics as well, but even so they will still go and support that persons event or Fed...
Here its more like kindergarden.

Ted what Joe is talking about is that Paulinho faxed the Confederation in Brazil ( Carlinhos Gracie organization ) the legal paper work from the State showing that the North Carolina Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation Inc. already exist. Paulinho spoke with Alvaro and Alvaro stated that all the document was in order and that they was not aware of the fact that ncbjjf already existed. He would give Cralinhos the paper work later during there meeting before Carolinhos leave to Cali because he would be in the USA for 2 months. See, If they wanted to start something here in NC thats great but they would have to use another name thats it. Plain and simple.

What mat are you talking about? Competition mat? LOL,When is the last time you competed and won? By the way i am only a blue belt that is maybe close to a purple in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, so i don't deserve to be on the same mat with you. You wear a black belt right? Are you really a black belt? How did you pay for it Cash, Check, or Charge? This is my last post for a while, but anyway good luck with the Bud Cup and the Federation. Peace :0)

Much Respect

Please don't take this stuff seriously. This is not the old west and everyone has their opinions. You can't beat people up because talk trash.

Peter, there is no reason to insult someone and to be disrepectful.

C'mom guys lighten up.

Just a thought,

# You can't beat people up because talk trash.

That is one place where I find that Western culture sucks, compared to some other cultures. "Talking trash" is offending one's honor, and one *should* be able to respond to that by putting the beat down on somebody.

Speaking only for myself, if Joe beat the snot out of this guy, got charged with a crime, and I was on the jury.. I'd vote to acquit, just on principle.

F#%@ it, you get in somebody's face (virtual or real-life) and talk sh!t, you deserve what you get, IMO.

If we practiced this mentality, I can guarantee you people would be more respectful. It's the same logic that explains why one of the most respectful crowds you will even encounter is the crowd at a gun show. :-)

Ok, I understand your viewpoint. I agree that people should be more respectful. I disagree with you that people have the right to beat someone up if they insulted or disrespected (if this is what you are saying). What do you do if someone disrespects you and you are not able to beat them up? For example, an 80 year old man gets disrespected by Matt Hughes? Does he now have the right to shoot him or hire someone to do it for him? Where does this get us? Honor is important and is a value that I treasure highly. There is a point where you have to take things with a grain of salt though.

I hope that my point is clear. I understand your view (I hope), but I just think it isn't reasonable.

Thank you,
Scott Shields

Ok, honestly I was being a little bit fascetious with my comments. No, I don't *really* think that you should be able to hire somebody to shoot somebody else because they insult you... well... at least I think I don't. It just pisses me off how in our society, nobody seems to be responsible for their actions anymore, especially in terms of blabbering on the Internet. I just think that every individual should have to accept that their actions and words have consequences and should live with a certain element of fear of those consequences. It's not a binary thing, and I don't know *exactly* where the line should be drawn.

I understand completely and am on the same page as yourself. People need to be more aware of their actions and some conseqences would be nice! I understand your frustration, I have the same frustrations all the time!

Thanks,
Scott Shields

#> Phillip, sup man long time no hear from.

Things are going pretty good. I haven't been around much mostly because I've been really focused on school / work / career stuff the last couple of years. From 2001 through now, I've finished one college degree that I was working on, and am down to 3 classes to finish another.

#> How's life?

Good, mostly. I've changed jobs a couple of times since the last time we spoke, but I'm at a place now in Cary that does telecom security software, and am enjoying it. I moved to a new apartment a few months ago and am still trying to get the place furnished and organized. So I'm staying busy, but life is basically OK

How 'bout yourself? Things going well?
