That's a tough one but something is causing it right. If it was a new GM motor, GM might say it's normal and offer extended warrenty(smile). Do you have roller rockers on the motor? Does the chattering seem stronger at lower rpm's such as 2000 rpm then disappear at higher r's? Do you have even roller tiped rocker arms? I discovered that the rocker arms were not square to the valve stem tip and the rocker arm was moving sidways across the tip of the valve stem. The pushrod was taking banging the pushrod guide and making that chattering noise. This was with roller rockers and it was a very annoying noise. I replaced the roller rockers with roller tiped rockers and the noise all but went away. Why, because the ball pivot that the roller tiped rockers use can move in two planes and "adjust" to the miss match between the rocker arm plane and the valve stem tip. The heads were probably machined like that from the factory as mine were. Hope this might put a light on this mystery.
