Subject: Spring Training Report

from Jim Caple,of ESPN.com....

After a long winter, there is nothing quite so satisfying as reading the daily notes from spring training camps each morning. But after a bizarre offseason during which baseball threatened to murder two teams before taking over the Expos, you might have missed some of these dispatches:

Arizona: Following his Game 7 success last fall, manager Bob Brenly announced that he plans to use LH Randy Johnson as a starter and a closer this year. ... RH Byung-Hyun Kim has lost 25 pounds, his hair is falling out in clumps and he is easily startled by loud noises but the reliever says he is otherwise unaffected by the consecutive game-deciding home runs he allowed in the World Series.

Atlanta: SS Rafael Furcal celebrated his 21st, 22nd and 23rd birthday yesterday.

Boston: The Red Sox ended GM Dan Duquette's tenure with the team yesterday when they removed the hard drive from his operating system. Under his severance package, Duquette will be paid his salary through January of 2004 and will be occasionally brought back to lay off front office staff. ... RH Pedro Martinez said his shoulder felt fine yesterday after throwing 40 pitches on the side. Next, he will try to throw 40 pitches from an upright position. ... The Red Sox are expected to trade for 2B Pokey Reese today, then release him tomorrow.

Cincinnati: Former Reds coach Ron Oester told the Cincinnati Enquirer that OF Ken Griffey Jr. is a bad influence in the clubhouse. "He uses up all the hot water in the shower, he doesn't rewind his video rentals, he always leaves the toilet seat up and he takes up two parking spots," Oester complained. Griffey denied that he seeks or wants special treatment, then relaxed in his personal black leather recliner during batting practice.

Colorado: 2B Pokey Reese accidentally reported to the wrong training camp, confused as to which team he plays for.

Florida: In a cost-cutting move, new owner Jeffrey Loria said the Marlins will not play games this year. ... Bobby Bonilla's agent announced yesterday that the former Marlin has retired. Bonilla is expected to hold a press conference today to announce that he is coming out of retirement. He will announce tomorrow that he is retiring.

Houston: The Astros paid $2.1 million to re-purchase the stadium naming rights from Enron yesterday and sold them to K-Mart. ... Houston pitchers worked on their fundamental drills when they practiced walking Barry Bonds intentionally.

Milwaukee: Commissioner Bud Selig admitted yesterday that in order to cover the Brewers payroll in 1995, he sold his immortal soul to Twins owner Carl Pohlad. He denied the sale represented a conflict of interest. "I really haven't missed it," he said. "On the contrary, I find it much easier to complete my duties without it." ... The Brewers hitters worked on their fundamental drills when they practiced walking back to the dugout after striking out.

Minnesota: There was a new wrinkle in the Twins contraction saga yesterday when Hennepin County district court Judge Harry Crump issued another order, ruling that the Twins must play in the Metrodome this season, but only if they stop using LaTroy Hawkins as their closer. ... Owner Carl Pohlad is mailing pre-approved credit cards with a special 17.6 interest rate to his fellow owners.

Montreal: Major League Baseball placed the Expos on eBay yesterday with general manager Omar Minaya saying that if no one meets the minimum reserve, baseball will sell the Expos at a big garage sale instead. ... The Expos traded OF Vladimir Guerrero and SS Orlando Cabrera to Milwaukee for a player to be named and placed Jose Vidro on waivers.

New York Mets: GM Steve Phillips traded away his entire team yesterday morning, then traded to get them all back in the evening.

New York Yankees: The Yankees held their annual spring training ritual yesterday when they voted on World Series shares. ... The Yankees also beefed up their scouting and development system yesterday by purchasing the Dominican Republic.

Texas: Despite their controversial pasts, LH John Rocker and OF Carl Everett are fitting in well with their new team. Both are great practical jokers. Rocker keeps everyone loose by greeting everyone with ethnic slurs each morning. Yesterday, Everett had his teammates in stitches when he choked Jerry Narron until the new manager passed out and had to be rushed to the hospital.
