Subject: Hey, You've Got To Hide That Glove Away.....

This whole business about Ruben Rivera being the new Yankee "clipper" has got me sitting on a fence. On one hand,I feel that even though the act itself was not all that unforgiveable,it could be a sign of a much more serious problem.I don't blame the Yankee organization for acting swiftly and not letting this potentially snowball into something that would have a much greater impact on team cohesiveness and/or reputation, which the organization puts such a high emphasis on and works so hard to maintain.

On the other hand, one has to wonder if the hard-nosed stance the Yankees took would have been the same if it was Jason Giambi (or any other starter) who was the thief, or if it was Luis Sojo's glove instead of Derek Jeter's that was stolen. Do the same "unwritten rules" apply to all players equally? Why is it the 24th man on the roster can no longer be trusted, but the star would most likely just be asked to throw a few dollars into the players' fine box. Was Derek Jeter more of a victim than Sojo would have been?

It will be interesting to see how MLB reacts - namely,if any other team opts to overlook Rivera's lack of trustworthiness in order to take advantage of his defensive skills, which are highly regarded. After all,Roberto Alomar,Darryl Strawberry,Doc Gooden,Steve Howe,Wil Cordero -these guys have all been given second (and 3rd,4th,5th,6th,&7th) chances for offensives deemed even more serious than this one.

By the way, the "message subject" is a play-on-words of a Beatles classic.....
