Subject: Padres.... Darr

In some bittersweet news, the necessary bonds to finance the new ballpark were finally sold yesterday, and no past, present, or future lawsuits can stop it now. Merrill Lynch delivered a check to the Mayor for $130 million, and construction will resume on Monday. I hope they find a way to remember Mike Darr, maybe naming the family park behind the CF fence in his honor... the address of the park is going to be 19 Tony Gwynn Dr., so maybe the intersecting street could be named for Darr... something.

I hope all the Padres play with that 100% determination, focus, and joy that Mike Darr did, and make this a memorable season. Last night, talking to Lorr in chat I mentioned a couple of my favorite memories of her of Darr. One of them, on a sunny Sunday afternoon... an amazing catch, running at full speed, jumping into the wall, and reaching at least 3 feet beyond the CF fence, to rob Eric Karros of a HR. I literally jumped off my couch in disbelief. Another one, on a Thursday afternoon game where I happened to be in attendance down the RF line. Again, running full speed, towards the bullpen in RF, and getting totally horizontal on a dive to make a catch on a foul ball. He got up, made sure he had the ball in his glove, checked out his bloody forearm, where all the skin had been scraped off in his dive... and as he started his trot to the dugout, he was grinning from ear to ear, and chewin' on that huge wad of tobacco.

Here's a poem that Lorr sent me yesterday that really meant a lot to me, so I thought I'd share...the author is Grantland Rice, who wrote this in 1948 as a eulogy to Babe Ruth. Mike Darr played the game right.

***
Game Called. Across the field of play
the dusk has come, the hour is late.
The fight is done and lost or won,
the player files out through the gate.
The tumult dies, the cheer is hushed,
the stands are bare, the park is still.
But through the night there shines the light,
home beyond the silent ill.

Game Called. Where in the golden light
the bugle rolled the reveille.
The shadows creep where night falls deep,
and taps has called the end of play.
The game is done, the score is in,
the final cheer and jeer have passed.
But in the night, beyond the fight,
the player finds his rest at last.

Game Called. Upon the field of life
the darkness gathers far and wide,
the dream is done, the score is spun
that stands forever in the guide.
Nor victory, nor yet defeat
is chalked against the players name.
But down the roll, the final scroll,
shows only how he played the game.
