No one bothered about the rag-tag collection of huts sitting on unauthorized property of Trivandrum Municipal Corporation. Slums are a distrubing reminder of a City's chronic shelter problem. It's existence seems to serve the useful purpose for both ruling and opposition political parties. Opposition will say "Look at how the ruling government is treating poor people". While ruling party say, "Government coffers are empty. It's due to mishandling of previous Government. We need more money for housing".

Those slums are not a place for life to begin. It is not a place for people to live along in a society highly literate and sending the people abroad for job.

In these huts, there is no running water, no waste handling and no health standards. There is no building codes, fire safety and tresspassing. Slums are the responsibility of Trivandrum Municipality. It has to recognize it's duty to raise the living standard of the people. I don't see how the opposition and ruling parties turning a blind eye on this issue.

Criminal culture among slum dwellers are high. The slum culture contaminate the entire community. It damages the neighbourhood's social cohesion. Some areas of the city are already take over by criminals.

The slums are an eye-opener and hope the responsible authority will do something to correct the problem. If not, in the near future, mafia like organization will sprang out and take over the city.
