Like Danielle, we cannot even start here until the 21st or later in May....
I usually am outside preparing the beds by April 1st, if the snow is all gone....doing some raking and after winter cleaning up....it is not unusual for the spring flowers to be up and out in full bloom by April 1st, even if there is snow....
This year, we are hoping to "raise" the large veggie garden...it is about 30' square, I'd say, that being a rough estimate...I would like to see about 4 4'x5' beds raised, and then do the square foot gardening, or at least give it a good try.....the beds should be no less that 36" high...leave what is left for foot paths and just plant grass or whatever...wildflowers would be a good idea wherever people wouldn't be walking.
I have a fair good sized pond garden, fair sized to me that is...the pond itself is just one of those preformed little guys, but large enough for the effect that I wanted...a large perennial bed in the backyard, an even larger bed out front for just irises, and then the flowerbeds that run across the front of the house.....they consist mostly of shrubs and some perennials, but I mostly plant annuals for quick color.
Love geraniums, and usually try to go with the old fashioned reds...they are so brilliant!
Beside the front porch there are 1/2 whiskey barrels, and they are usually planted wiith an assortment of petunias, with a spike up thru the center...
We have plans on doing a shade garden up in the bush area....we have an acre to play with, and most of it is still bush!....have already transplanted some of the plants that are shade tolerant, so that is hopefully going to be started this year as well...WELCOME SPRING!!!
