i grew up in shingle springs/rescue (not far from coloma) and spent a lot of time around the vineyard house, coloma theatre, marshall monument, and pioneer cemetary (mainly while my brother and sister where rehearsing for plays at the theatre) i've toured the vineyard house a few times and used to hang out in the cellar-bar area drinking cokes and eating popcorn.

i was once related a story about Robert Chalmers' last days that was different from the "official" story (you know... the one about the madness and starvation in the cell) as the story goes Mr Chalmers was quite the ladies' man (thus the syphilis). one of his prior love interests stole into the cell one night, brought him to a servants quarters on the property and provided him with a pistol. Mr Chalmers then comitted suicide. i'm not sure how valid the story is, but the woman who told me the story seemed quite convinced.

one time while eating popcorn with my best friend in the cellar we both saw a man walk down the hall (past the cells). we went down the hall to the locked cell (being used as a storage room) and no-1 was there.

another time my parents stayed there overnight (so this is a second hand story). they stayed in the room next to room 5 (5's the room where people report sounds of a struggle). it was the middle of the night and my mom had to use the restroom (down the hall). she was afraid to go alone so my stepdad walked her down the hall. the door to room 5 was open and one of the beds was unmade, there was a teddy bear there for some reason too. in the morning the bed was made. mom figured that someone's kid stayed there and got scared perhaps climbed in bed with its parents in another room. she mentioned this to one of the staff that was making the beds. the maid-lady said she didnt make the bed and told my mom that she must be mistaken. pretty weird.

i would actually be interested in possibly purchasing the vineyard house should it ever be up for sale again. it's always held kind of a soft spot in my heart.
