Jink never did understand why captains had to arrive significantly earlier than other officers at a ship's christening. For that matter, he didn't get why they weren't allowed on the ship until afterwards. Thankfully, Jink had the forethought to sneak something to occupy his mind. To be specific, he brought a microcomputer, on the pretense of putting a few finishing touches on the speech that drew ever nearer.

He took the opportunity to put on the computer, and turn it on. The holographic keyboard and display sprang into existance. He felt the slight tingle as the hard drive sprang to life. It was only a few terabytes, but it wasn't like he was going to have a copy of the entire ship's manifest, logs, programs, and blueprints. Tapping a few keys, the keyboard split off a control display. One of his games popped up, a strategy excercise, Jink justified it as, and started a campaign. He was sure to get quite a ways into the missions until anything interesting happenned. Moments later, unknown to those around him, the captain was lost in a war that spanned galaxies.
